I am excited about the start of new school year so far. All of my students are getting adjusted to working after a summer break. Everyone has been given access to Rosetta Stone Spanish, access to ePals, and access to eReaders. We will continue to have tennis lessons each Friday, golf lessons on Fridays, and we are still waiting for a swim schedule. Please remember to have your child in PE uniforms on Fridays. Although Fridays are a "free day" for our 3rd-12th graders, they will be asked to complete any unfinished work following activities. The students have also been assigned the book, "Around the World in 80 Days" to read by this Friday. I realize that this book is a challenge for the students, but I am trying to assess their comprehension levels at this time. Following this book, I will be assigning each child less challenging books. Our science class with Dr. Wilson was scheduled to start up this week. His wife had eye surgery this week, so our science class may start next week.
Our first week of school was successful. Everyone is getting used to our curriculum and learning the flow our schedule. Please remember to login using your parent login when checking your child's work. If you login using your child's login account, you could kick them out of the program, possibly causing them to lose the work they working on. All parents were sent an email to create a parent account. If you did not receive the email or are confused, please see me. The website to our online curriculum is risingstarnc.ignitiaschools.com (DO NOT TYPE www. before the web address).
This week, tennis lessons will be Friday 12:30pm-1:30pm. Tennis will be 9:30am-10:30am for the following weeks. On Monday, I will have the golf schedule. I also hope to have the swim schedule this week. All sports will be on Fridays. Please be sure that your child is at school by 8:30am if they will be attending sports on Fridays. Also, please be sure they are in their PE uniforms.
Our science class with Dr. Wilson is scheduled to start on September 6th (1pm-3pm).
Another great week of school. We are having a great year so far and I have a wonderful group of students to teach.
Parents, if you have not already done so, please login to Ignitia Online to view your child's progress. The website again is risingstarnc.ignitiaschools.com (do not add "www" in front of the web address). You should have received an email inviting you to create your Ignitia Schools account.
Our tennis and golf lessons went well this week. We will have swim lessons on Mondays for the next 2 weeks and then we will go back to Fridays starting in September. Please be sure that your child has swimming gear, even if that means shorts and a tshirt for swim lessons. Swim lessons for the next 2 weeks will be at Gypsy Divers in Raleigh from 12:30pm-1:30pm.
I have heard that some parents are not receiving the information that I send home with the students. I will attempt to keep this page updated for you to keep up with our class activities.
1. We will begin swimming again this week. We will be out at Buffaloe Rd Aquatic Center in North Raleigh.
2. We are trying to find an indoor facility to continue playing tennis in until the weather gets warm again.
3. Golfing will remain on hold until the weather gets warmer.
4. Every day, a different student in our class leads a different club. Please ask your child to fill you in on the various clubs that we have, and what their roles are.
5. Please be sure that you child is studying for upcoming quizzes and tests each night. They are allowed to use their handwritten notes on quizzes and tests. They should also review their submitted work for homework. I have explained to my students that they must review at home in order to be successful. We just don't have enough time during the school day to do everything that they need to do.
6. It is very important to login to view your child's work at least weekly. You will find important teacher's notes, and you will see your child's progress.
7. Please be sure that you child reads at least 30 minutes each night. They have a book club book, and a skit to keep them reading.
Starting this week, here is our new extra-curricular schedule at RSCA:
* Monday is Music (taught by Evan and Isaiah): 9:15am-10am
* Tuesday is Soccer (taught by Mr. David): 9:05am-10am
* Wednesday is T-ball/Softball (taught by Mr. RJ): 9:05am-10am
* Thursday is Basketball (taught by Mr. Knight): 9:05am-10am
* Friday is Golf for K-12th group and Tennis for 3rd-12th group
**Spanish is taught each day while Ms. Veronica relieves the teacher to coach their sport
Parents, this is just a friendly reminder that it is very important that you check your child's grades and progress several times each week. You can access your child's grades and submitted coursework by going to this link: http://risingstarnc.ignitiaschools.com Please copy and paste the link in your web browser because it must be entered exactly how I have it above or it won't work for you.
I do not assign new homework for my students, but the work that they do not complete during the day becomes their homework. It is your child's responsibility to stay caught up in their coursework, but they also need a little parental supervision from time-to-time. When they are here at school, they are required to stay on task and complete their work, but I know that they may not always tell parents when they have work to complete. That's why it's important for you to check their assignments to be sure they are completed by the due date each day.
Working together, we can push your child to their highest potential.
It is very important to us here at RSCA to teach your child what accountability really means. As you know, in "real life", we have have deadlines and we are accountable for our actions. To help with this lesson, students will no longer be allowed to fall behind on their lessons. All work that is found overdue will be given a grade of a "0" on the next school day at 9am. Students have the ability to see upcoming work, about 2 weeks prior to the due date, so they must learn to "stay on task" and use their time wisely. Students also should finish any work at home that they don't finish at school. The public libraries have computers that students can work on, and they have resources that the students can check out to complete essays, etc. A grade of a "0" can seriously damage a student's GPA, but they must be accountable for their work each day. They don't have new work on Fridays, so they must complete all of their work Monday-Thursday.
Please partner with us as we help your child grow into the responsible/accountable individuals that God would desire them to be.
What the Bible says about accountability:
** Galatians 6:5 ESV / For each will have to bear his own load.
**Colossians 3:23 ESV / Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men
**Luke 16:10 ESV / “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.
On October 30th, our class will go to Henderson to partner with the organization, ACTS. We will help with the health screening fair taking place that day for the homeless. We will leave around 9am and will return around 12pm. If you would like to participate, we would love to have you join us.
-Last night was another LOCK-IN for our 3rd-12th grade students. Students stayed overnight at RSCA and played laser tag, enjoyed music, played video games, pranked those who dared to fall asleep, and just a lot of fellowship and fun! RSCA students ROCK!
- This Wednesday 2/12/14 is Picture Day. There is no obligation to purchase the photos, but I think that you will be pleasantly surprised with New Image Photography's work. We will begin the photo session at 9am.
-Please remember to login often to check your child's grades in Ignitia. As a way to stop excessive amounts of overdue work, we have eliminated the ability to be overdue. If a student is sick, they are responsible for catching up their work, but they won't receive a zero for the overdue work if they provide a doctor's note or other credible documentation. Students have been instructed to finish their assignments by 9am the following day, or receive zeros for unfinished work. It is my goal to create real world experiences for my students and to push them into excellence.
-During the winter months, we don't typically go out for outdoor sports. If you have indoor activity ideas for our group, please feel free to share those ideas on this blog. We are seeking free or low cost activities that won't be a financial burden on any family.
We are starting to "wind down" for the school year. Many of the students will end on time or early, but there are those who are working very hard to catch up. Some students started late in the year, and are just working to end on time. For those who are not finished with the curriculum by the end of June, they will be required to work in July in order to finish the curriculum and be promoted to the next grade level. As always, please be sure that you are monitoring your child's grades through Ignitia, and creating studying plans for them at home.
Monday, May 26th, we are closed for Memorial Day.
Friday, May 30th, we are scheduled for our annual NC Zoo trip. Please be sure your child arrives by 7:30am on this day. We will leave promptly at 7:30am.
