I'm excited to have you all as members, and I hope that we can meet face-to-face really soon. Those of you who are good with event planning, please just help us plan a time and place to meet face-to-face.
I'm Candice Allen. Yall can call me Kandi (Candy) for short. I'm so excited to be a part of RSCA PTA. I'm available anytime/anyday for a meet and greet. Hope to hear from all of you soon.
Can you provide us with some dates and times that you and your mother-in-law would like to host our first PTA meeting? For me, evenings or weekends is the best time for me. I'm generally at school from 7am until 4:30pm or 5:30pm.
So let's try a Saturday afternoon. That should accommodate everyone that's busy during the week. Plus, it gets dark so early now and I don't think any of us should be out at night especially since it's been so cold. My mother-in-law lives in North Raleigh off Capital Blvd by Triangle Mall. Really easy to find.
I'm super Excited as well to jump start our PTA with a meet and greet.
I'm available most days if needed
How does a Saturday afternoon sound to you?
Saturday sounds good
Hi all, I'm LaSaundra and I try to be as involved as I can with my children's education. I don't think I'll be able to make this meeting, but would like to make 3 suggestions: (1) I would like for the PTA to do a technology drive because I would like to see the preschoolers have more access to technology. I think that the teachers should have access to technology (smartboards, laptops, or a mobile lab to share between classes) as well as the school have a subscription to ABC Mouse.com. I understand funds are limited, but we should look into grant writing or ask our employers to donate any unwanted PCs to the school. If companies did this, would they be eligible to receive a tax deduction for their equipment donation?
(2) I am not sure when the staff has teacher workdays, but the PTA should supply lunch or breakfast for teachers on these days.
(3) I think that the school should have a "Founders Day" Program. This will be an annual day that we celebrate Mr. and Mrs. Knight, we get a local key-note speaker to address students and encourage them to excel academically and spiritually. The students should showcase their creative abilities (art gala, choir sings, instrumentalist, etc). This can also be a day that students get recognized for special awards (i.e. attendance, most improved, highest GPA, citizenship awards, etc..).
The only issue I see is that we may need to move this to a bigger venue or treat it like a "Founders Day Banquet." Again, I know money may be an issue, but some of us may have resources to where we won't be charged to pay fees for using venues. I may have access to a middle or high school auditorium and cafeteria. I just need to get the dates in as soon as possible if you all agree this is a project that you want to do.
I appreciate the suggestions you made, but wanted to make a couple corrections so that we are aware of actual needs for RSCA.
The teachers have access to technology in the classroom. We have NOOK tablets that the teachers are aware that they can borrow for their classrooms. We have several electronic Leap Frog/Leap Pad devices in our library that the students use. I've even seen teachers bring in laptops for various projects. We used to keep a desktop computer in the Preschool classroom, but our State Consultant said that computers couldn't be kept in the classroom if they are not in operation for a certain number of hours out of the day. Because we didn't want to give the teachers yet another task to track, we moved the technology resources to the library, and teachers can check them out and use them as needed, based on what they are teaching in the classroom. The problem is not necessarily with the access to technology, it is teaching the students to value and take care of the items that they use in the classroom. I would like to see where the PTA helps to get more parents involved and dealing with behavior issues so that when the students arrive at school, they respect the school property and they don't damage the technology, which is pretty expensive.
RSCA doesn't have scheduled teacher workdays, but celebrating the teachers is a good idea. I would love to see us really beef up "Teachers' Appreciation Week", and even add some appreciation days throughout the year.
We actually did a ceremony last year similar to the Founders Day ceremony you are describing. It was held at RSCA, and the students from the youngest to the oldest were recognized for their achievements. We plan to do the same thing this year, but we need planners helping with such events because it takes a great deal of planning. We had the ceremony last year when it was a little warmer. We want to host as many events as possible at RSCA so that we can make ourselves known in the community and have people coming to our location. I know we don't have a lot of space, but we also had a couple outdoor events last year that were pretty successful. When we meet, I can share those events that we did.
I think that we need to meet and discuss things that RSCA has done in the past, what we currently do, what resources we currently have, and then find out what the actual needs are. Many of the needs that we have are not material.
Thank you so much for your suggestions. I'm excited for our first meeting.
Hi everyone! I'm planning to join the PTA but first need to pay the fee. I'll take care of that tomorrow. I'm available to meet every other Saturday. However this Saturday I'm going to work to make up some lost time from work due to the snow.
If you are meeting this Saturday, I'll be available after 3:30pm. I work in WF and the mall isn't too far. I'll be in the general area.
It sounds as though the best day may not be Saturday for a PTA meeting. What we used to do for the PTA meetings is have the meetings at school, just before the end of the day. Since the teachers leave now at 4:30pm, maybe we could have a PTA meeting from 3:30pm until 4:30pm. It would be convenient because everyone has to come to pick up their children from RSCA and wouldn't have to worry about extra travel. I suggest that we meet Tuesday, February 4th from 3:30pm until 4:30pm. Please let me know what you all think.
I agree Roxanne. Count me in. Next Tuesday @ 3:30pm. Where should we meet?
My students are all gone by 3:30pm, so my classroom would be a perfect place for us to meet. Also, your children wouldn't be able to see you when you come to the meeting because you would just come directly to my classroom.
Sounds good to me! See you then!
I've been working on the spirit stick idea that we discussed in the last PTA meeting. There are some DIY ideas I found on the internet that I'm gonna try out. Does RSCA have a theme/school colors? I'm gonna get some poster boards as well so we can keep a tally of each classes progress. Hope I'll have something finished by the end of this week.
I was also brought up in the meeting that RSCA is in need of some fundraising ideas. Here's a link that I think might help us. www.booster.com. The idea is that we can sale T-shirts in support of RSCA and the best thing, IT'S FREE, no funds needed on the front end. We can promote our campaign through social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc and I think it would also be a good idea to poster flyers and send some home with the kids.
Let me know what yall think!
Great ideas Candice. Our school colors are lime green, royal blue, and white. Our school statement is "Where Jesus is the Foundation". Thank you
Got it! I also found another fundraising site where we can sell candles. Not sure if the t-shirts or candles would sell better though. Plus I don't want to overwhelm the other parents with selling/buying stuff.
Yes, I agree with you. I don't do a lot of "selling" style fundraisers because I never want to overwhelm them with selling items. I am hoping to do my event style fundraisers. This will allow us to host events and pay small admission fees to enter the events. I think a combination of the "selling" and "event" style fundraisers would be great.
So pretty much like the Family Fun Day event we discussed. I'll still look on the internet for some ideas that we can incorporate that are on that same level.
I am so glad that our PTA is on a roll! I look forward to participating.
I was wondering when the next PTA meeting would be? Could we have one on every first Tuesday of the month? Something easy for everyone to remember.
Hi PTA Team:
We were not able to meet last Tuesday (the 1st Tuesday of the month) due to inclement weather. I was hoping to reschedule the missed meeting. I would like for us to vote on PTA positions so that everyone is working towards a goal. I know that many of us have hectic work schedules and it is a bit of a challenge to meet sometimes. I wanted to propose that we consider video chatting using ooVoo or something like that for the PTA meetings. Maybe once each quarter, we can meet face-to-face over a weekend or weekday evening at a dining location or host home. ooVoo is usually able to include up to 20 people on a single video chat conference. I think that would allow us to meet later in the evening without taking us away from family obligations. Please let me know your thoughts.
I'm on board with the video chats as well. When would be the best time for everyone to get together? I still think the first Tuesday of each month is good for video chats and maybe the third Saturday of each quarterly month to meet face-to-face. Just my thoughts, though. ^_^
Hi PTA Team:
Below is the information for our next meeting. One of our PTA Team members said that ooVoo and Skype doesn’t work well for her, so I am switching the chat program to Anymeeting. Many tech support reps use this program, and it is also free. If you have an apple or android device, you only need to download the small app to get started. If you will be using your computer to connect, you only need to open a browser page at www.anymeeting.com. It allows up to 200 people to connect at once, so it should definitely work fine for our group. Since we missed our “1st Tuesday of the month” meeting due to the weather, I would like to have a meeting this Tuesday, March 18th. Every meeting after that will be on the 1st Tuesday of each month. I would encourage everyone to try to do a test connection to the meeting prior to Tuesday’s meeting, so that all technical issues or connection questions are resolved prior to the actual meeting date. To do a “test” connection, please email me when you want to do a test meeting, and I will open up a meeting session for us to try. Meeting info:
-Date: Tuesday, March 18th
-Time: I’m proposing 6:30pm (if this doesn’t work, please let me know and we can change it to a time that works for everyone)
-Meeting method: www.anymeeting.com/rscatutor1
**You will receive a reminder about this meeting from Anymeeting.
Thank you all for attending the PTA meeting tonight. I am grateful for parents like you who really want to be involved at RSCA. Since we will have PTA meeting on the 1st Tuesday of each month, our next meeting will be April 8th at 6:30pm. We will use the same conference call line we used tonight unless someone wants to test a different video chat system. If so, please let's test it before the next meeting so that all technical difficulties are worked out. Again, thank you all for your support, time, and BIG hearts!
I am providing a website I found that may help with car magnets/window decals http://www.thespiritzone.com/
Hope this helps.

I need some input for the spirit stick idea I want to get started next month. Basically, it will be a school wide competition where each class has a chance to win the RSCA spirit stick to show off their achievement in various areas. I thought about making it a class competition between each student but thought that some kids might inadvertently be left out. The way I see it, each class will participate as a whole so everyone is included.
Each class will be awarded points based on 5 areas that can include class participation, good behavior, tidiness, etc. My son is in the 2-3 yr/old class so an example of 5 things could be:
* Putting on/taking off coats/hats by themselves
* Being polite (saying please and thank you w/out being prompted)
* Active listening during class
* Picking up toys after playtime
* Going "potty" w/out any assistance
I hope you see where I'm going with this. Points can be awarded to students in older classes for things like:
* Helping out in other classes i.e. assisting in activities or tutoring
* Extra book reading challenges
* Collecting Box Tops
I don't have older children so I'm not sure what additional things they can do. I was trying to think of things from my school days but that was a very long time ago. ^_^ Are there any things that any of you can think of or may want your child to improve on? Just trying to find a way to get and keep our children motivated throughout the school year.
Thanks in advance!
